6.) Timing is of Essence!
If you live in a country where the calender year and the school year or academic year both begin in January, then you need to be aware of the fact that in many au pair host destinations, the school year begins in September. What are the implications of this for your au pair application? This simply means that a large majority of parents of school going children want to have an au pair who would be available slightly before the beginning of the school year. It is also slightly around the months of June, July or August, that a family's au pair contract may be coming to an end.
Au pair host families tend to begin the searching for a suitable au pair months in advance. Consequently, if you the prospective au pair wants to increase your chances of getting an au pair host family, then you would be better off preparing and sending in your au pair application documents or preparing your on line au pair profile months in advance.
Of course recruiting for September is not the rule. For example, the anticipated arrival of a baby or some unforeseen events may lead potential host families to bring in an au pair at different times of the year. Overall, if you prefer looking after school aged children, applying several months before September is highly recommended.
